In the book
“Robinson Crusoe”, Daniel Defoe writes the experiences of the main character, Robinson Crusoe, when he lived
on a desert island for 26 years. Before Robins Crusoe was an ordinary person who was born in a middle-class family so he didn’t need to
worry about his livelihood. But one day, he felt bored and wasn’t satisfied with his current situation
so he decided to go out to explore the unknown world. Then he followed a flotilla to create a new way of
his own. But unfortunately, the flotilla encountered heavy storm so the ships all wrecked and almost
all of the mariners died of drowning except for Robinson Crusoe. Fortunately, he was rushed by
the wave to the shore of a desert island that was isolated and very far from his hometown. On the island,
there were no familiar people and living style but danger and desperation. It was the first time for
Robinson to feel really lonely. For surviving, he needed to find a new way of living. He learned how to light
a fire and preserve the kindling. He chopped trees down to make his own boat and hunted the goat for food
and learned how to feeding livestock. He even fought with beasts and savages. That’s a complete
new way of life for Robinson. He ignited Bonfire to attract sailors’ attention so they could take him
home but nobody came. What’s more, he rescued a savage,
“Friday” and they lived together for many years. Finally, he was spotted by
passing sailors and got back home.
In this book,
Daniel Defoe’s theme or what he wants the readers to know is that everyone will
come across troubles or even desperation, everyone will have a
feeling of being lonely. What we need to do is to use our spirits to motivate us to deal with the problems.
Robinson once was a lucky man who was born in a happy
family but he was unlucky also when he decided to choose his own way of life.
When he was in the deserted island, many problems came. The
unfamiliar island was full of danger so Robinson did plentitude
preparations like ,” My next care was for some ammunitions and arms. There were
2 very good fowling-pieces
in the great cabin, and two pistols. “ . The danger that Robinson met is not only the beast and savages, but also like food and water
shortage, how to get accommodation and so on. What’s more, the biggest problem is loneness and
desperation. “It was in vain to sit still and wish for what was not to
be had; and this extremity my applications.” Robinson looked forward to the
come of someone’s help but no one came. So he depended on himself
to deal with those problems, like “I had but newly finished my fence, and began to enjoy my labor,
when the rains came on, and made my sticks close to my first habitation.”
Robinson Crusoe is
a really good fictions that is worthy reading. In this book, Daniel Defoe
depicts a lonely but tough man successfully. SO I think the best part
of the book is how Robinson built up his new home and implement an entire new way of life. The main
character is vivid so the readers may imagine themselves as Robinson Crusoe to plant crops and fight with
savages on the island. When Robinson met with “Friday” and
finally come back home, the readers may feel happy for him. And the book
advocates a positive point that
no matter what an intractable problem you encounter, you can deal with it. It
isn’t more difficult than live in a deserted island lonely for 26
years. As for the negative point, this character may be not so believable and the author should add Robinson’s
thoughts. And because the author focus on the main character
so other characters are weaken. In a word, Robinson Crusoe is a really good
book for us to read and dig.
